To Lead a Life Worth Living

Written 5 August 2010 (Note hyperlinks in orange)

Two weeks ago I had the opportunity to talk with entrepreneur Ben Huh, of I Can Has Cheezburger, Fail Blog and other memes.

When I asked him about his ambitions, he responded without hesitation: “I want to lead a life worth living.” And since that day, his comment has continued to resonate in my mind.

Recently our oldest son, Andrew, was home from Germany to spend time with us before his one-year deployment to Afghanistan begins next month. It was a joy for all of us to be together.

Whenever he’s home, we make a pilgrimage to Hood River, Oregon, the breathtakingly beautiful place where my paternal grandparents settled after they immigrated from Japan in the early 1900s. As a teenager, Andrew spent summers working in the orchards during the cherry harvest. He is the only fourth-generation (yonsei) kid in the family to do so.

Beside learning the ways of a new country, my grandparents' early days were physically tough—clearing land, planting trees and growing strawberries between rows to earn money until their orchards were mature enough to bear fruit. "Nakamura Ranch" grew cherries, pears and apples. My grandparents built the small home where they raised three sons and lost two daughters. They endured internment at Tule Lake during World War II and were met with bitter hostility when they returned after the war ended.

Van cherries are not commercially sold.
My two uncles worked alongside my grandparents, and now, decades later, it is a third-generation farm, owned by one of my cousins.

Whenever we visit during cherry season, my aunt and uncle send us home with a large box to share with family and friends in Seattle. This year they included two types of cherries: Lamberts, and my personal favorites, Vans.

Among the people we share them with are our long-time neighbors across the street. Kathy, like me, also is a breast cancer survivor. But unfortunately, after years in remission, two years ago she was found to have bone cancer that had metastasized throughout her body.

She went through chemotherapy and became so weak and sick that I was sure she wouldn’t make it. But somehow she rebounded, and on sunny days I would look out the window to see her tending her beloved gardens.

So you might be wondering how this relates back to Ben Huh?

Today I stopped by to visit Kathy and drop off some cherries. I knocked on the door and there was no answer. I was about to set the bag down in a shady spot when she opened the door.

About two months ago Kathy underwent surgery for necrosis of the jaw bone, a condition where the jaw bone dies and becomes exposed, sometimes caused by drugs used in chemotherapy or for treatment of osteoporosis. Her surgery was extensive and left a great deal of pain in its wake.

She looked thin and frail, but she invited me to sit and visit with her on her front porch bench.

We talked about her family, her health and her prognosis.

She spoke with some difficulty, but told me she has only a few months to live, and at some point soon will be receiving hospice care. For those of you who don’t know, hospice is palliative care for the last leg of life’s journey. I asked her how she felt about dying, and she told me she is ready. She’s been ready.

She took a cherry from the paper sack and put it into her mouth, savoring its sweetness. It was a small act, but it represented the fruit of my grandparents' struggles and made me mindful of how the simplest of things can give a moment of joy.

As I said goodbye, I offered to help in any way a neighbor can, and walked away feeling great sadness about what lies ahead for her.

But I knew one thing:
She’s lead a life worth living.

My Dog Ate Poop This Morning....

It wasn't human poop or anything, but still gross! The perils of having a pack, where is Cesar Milan when you need him?

Other than that, perfect day really! Hardly worked, took an hour walk uphill, was treated to breakfast/cupcakes/dinner. Enjoyed watching children destroy Guitar Center and then buy everything at Best Buy. Got a really cool microphone so now I can play back my bad singing on the computer! I plan on loading a song for all of you, so you may want to put down the volume next time you visit☺

Here is a new PIF. I coined this one on the other blog when I was forbidden by the husband, aka overlord of the web, from using social sites instead of spending time w/family and friends in real life!

Right Click/Save this baby! Follow the rules or the Chihuahuas will sneak over to your house and poop on your carpet too!

Rules and Regs....

Don't resell, use as a link base, alter/resell, pimp out as your own, etc. etc. Just don't be a jerk, k?

Thanks and love to my loyal readers!

Pamprin/Therapy let's discuss....

One of those migraine days! I feel like my head will burst and all I want to do is lay down. So to continue in the "no boundaries" direction that my blogs always seem to head down, let's go over some fun times I'm having today! If you want to see some of my older rants and raves/personal business...

Jewelry by Tara Blog

You remember that saying "If you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say it at all?" Well, I will leave it at that about work today. But I will show you a really cool logo I made this week.

I do have some fabulous customers and even some that have become friends. So it ain't all bad!

This weekend I plan to bake in the sun every chance I get, work on my singing, and be next to my husband 24/7. That's the plan, most likely I'll work and exercise the whole time.

More new logos later kiddies!

Thanks for reading,

You Brain Too Short to Box with God II: God Hates Fags?

Courtesy of my friend Meghan, a concise visual depiction of one of the most, to me, irritating aspects of current American culture, the religious Right's obsession that somewhere, somehow, two men or two women are gettin' jiggy wit it.Honestly, WTF?

Is it some sort of prehominid monkeybone itch-scratching, poop-flinging, knuckle-walking instinct that makes some people worry about this? Or is it that organized religion can make you bone stupid? I mean, you have all the OTHER biblical stuff going on; war, famine, pestilence, death, Newt Gingrich...and some people seem to have a desperate need to fixate on this nonsense.

Remember how I was just feeling utterly drained by the ridiculousness of what seems to pass for 90% of American life? Well, this is just one of parts that make the sum of that feeling.

Cherie Currie

***********UPDATE***********
Holy f'n sh*t, it really was her! Starstruck stupid I am...

I just got a comment below that says it's from Cherie Currie and I'm beyond freaking out!!!! If this is really you I have to apologize if I sounded like a huge BITCH! I have been obsessively thinking about everything I read in your book for a week now and it put me into a big 'ol funk. (But good to remember where you have been so you don't go there again:) So know that I appreciate the message for the kiddies about not doing drugs and I was right there with you in the 80's. Born in '71 so I missed the great Bowie music and I was stuck w/China Girl Bowie.

For my loyal readers, friends, and coworkers, run, do not walk, buy the book, visit her site....

http://www.chainsawchick.com/

and rent "Foxes" with Cherie Currie. Her movie portrayal is like me in the bad old days, except blonde and thin! lol

For a hollywood version of the book (but still fab) The Runaways movie is a great watch!

Not a crazed fan, just someone who absolutely loves your work and is nostalgic for the music! Plus, being an artist I understand how putting all your energy into creative pursuits can really help out the psyche.

Love and thanks!

Just not much to say at the moment.

Something about the dog days of Summer, perhaps?

I just can't find anything to say that doesn't involve:

1. Domestic stuff that, while infinitely entertaining to me, isn't really worthwhile fodder for public conversations,

2. Public matters that I can provide neither intelligent discussion nor a unique perspective.

The sad fact is that, once again, my own present circumstances are fairly benign and even pleasant while it seems like the larger world is going to Hell in a handbasket with someone unpleasant - Newt Gingrich, perhaps?

I observe this, noting in passing that the top "news" stories on my Comcast webpage (unavoidable when checking mail, otherwise avoided like an orthodox rabbi walking wide of the Armour hot dog packing plant...) were something about Kate Couric making snarky comments about Sarah Palin's kid's names, and a woman who sent a text message with her toes while tied up by a burglar.

And the only real reaction I can manage to all of this is a sort of irritated grunt.

There seems to be nothing I can do about this idiocy, and to even attempt to tease out whatever threads of common sense are hidden within is to lend myself to the madness surrounding the celebritized, commercialized, Tea-Party-ized, Sarah-Palinized, moron-grade pottage that passes for the Velveeta brand of middlebrow American culture. I come away feeling vaguely unclean and with a strong urge to bite something, perhaps myself.

I have been thinking about teaching, learning, and education as I see it effecting this mess, and I want to post something about that. But that will have to wait a bit for my work schedule to ease off a little bit.

Until then, enjoy the great Ella Fitzgerald bringing you "Night and Day"...

Catching up on cr*p!

Hello all!

I've been busy trying to have somewhat of a personal life off the web this past week. Even though I have over 15 current clients, everyone seems to be taking it slow for the summer.

So here's what's up...

Band is getting a lot better and of course so is my singing! We are going to record our whole set list soon and I'm hoping to post it here. My friend wants to do a UTube video but the boys are shy! Which is completely ridiculous since they are awesome!!!

Read/watched The Runaways and "Neon Angel" by Cherie Currie. After reading this book I decided I would continue to not do drugs and/or act like an idiot! Remember girls, it is true what they say that if you get in a car with strangers you will get raped or worse, so please don't. Thank you.

Also watched a foreign film called "Kiss" which was just beautiful! Not going to give anything away here because the movie is more of a feeling than a story. But if you just want to experience a mix of childhood excitement and a new country, this is the movie for you.

I've been working out for over an hour a day and I've gained 5 pounds!!! Go figure, it had to happen to me. I bought the gimmicky shoes that promise you some fab calves and a$$, so I'm going to go walk today and see if I look like a MILF again after that. On another beauty subject, how the hell did I ever keep these fake nails on when I created jewelry? I keep breaking them just walking around. Another unhealthy thing I'm doing for myself (to myself), is baking my brains out in the sun every day. The only thing that is stopping me from getting my Jersey tan on at the salon is that it's summer and the sun is free. But since I'm going to get cancer anyways from growing up in the 80's (think about this), I really want to tan in the winter.

That last paragraph reminded me, JERSEY FRICKIN' SHORE! Love it, need it, can't get enough!!! The funniest thing about this show is I grew up in NYC and everyone there rips on Jersey. We won't even fly into their airport when we go home! I love my Jersey people, but a lot of the cr*p on the show is true, I swear it! I think this is what brainwashed me on the fake tan/nails again. We all got a little Jersey bitch in there somewhere☺

So you are probably thinking "Tara is the shallowest gal in the world!" No, I'm actually just kind of having my 10th mid life breakdown/crisis. I'm still volunteering, working, being the weirdest mom on the block (county). This summer sh*t has got to go. If these kids don't start High School and Middle School soon I'm going to lose it worrying. Trying to distract myself and that's how the Jersey glow started! I'll be back to my hippy roots in Sept. and drop the kids off in my P.J.'s, no makeup, and a mug 'o' black coffee. Right now, I want to look like I actually got out of bed! lol

Also reading, watching, listening, etc. Joan Jett and The Runaways music. Not as good as expected, still kinda fun. Really sounds dated and that freaks me because I grew up with Joan Jett. Also enjoying Boston, The Beatles, and Zeppelin. See, I'm having a f'n mid-life crisis! I haven't listened to this stuff since I was a teenager. The band also does a lot of this kind of rock, Rush, ZZTop, Creedence. I honestly hate singing it, I'd rather do girly songs. I'm going to start reading Suzie Quatro, Unzipped today. She's like the pre-Joan Jett so hopefully it will put me in a good '70's, Matt Dillon (think Little Darlings), Camero driving, bell bottom wearing, mood! That Cherie Currie book just sucked the fun right outta the 70's! Some people should just not do drugs! I mean ALL people should not do drugs...

Okay friends, off to get this party started, nails fixed, back to school hats bought, and maybe a movie?

Thank y'all for reading!
